Communicating about housing in the UK: obstacles, openings, and emerging recommendations

Identifying how people think about affordable, quality housing, and how we can strategically address those beliefs to build support for social change.

Date published:

The way we talk about housing matters. Many people in the UK already know the key problems that need solving in the field of housing. But there are commonly held beliefs and attitudes which stand in the way of social change. We want to understand public attitudes to housing so that we can talk about it more clearly.

This brief identifies those beliefs and explores what they mean for researchers and advocates in the housing sector. It offers recommendations to address obstacles and leverage openings in public thinking.

It builds upon earlier project work ‘Moving from Concern to Concrete Change', which offered evidence-based recommendations to communicate about social housing in the UK.

This brief is part of a project on framing housing in the UK conducted by the FrameWorks Institute in partnership with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Nationwide Foundation.
